Rise and shine to the first full day of your winter adventure in Iceland! Today you will go on an iconic road trip through the Golden Circle, a route that passes through Icelandic countryside to see spouting geysers, crashing waterfalls and stunning views all around.

Your first stop will be in Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here you will be able to look down a volcanic rift and straddle two tectonic plates, the only place where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet and can be seen on dry land. Thingvellir is recognized as the place in which Iceland’s identity as a nation began.

Visit the spouting hot springs of the Great Geysir and Strokkur where you’ll be able to walk around the geothermic area. The lively Strokkur spouts water 100 feet into the air every few minutes, so have your camera and enjoy the show.

Gullfoss, or the ‘Golden Waterfall’, is a magnificent two-tiered waterfall that drops 105 feet into a narrow canyon 230 feet deep and 1.5 miles long. Geologists believe that this canyon was formed by sudden releases of massive amounts of water from melted glaciers—pretty impressive!

Experience the northern lights, aka aurora borealis. Nature will decide whether this Icelandic sight is yours to enjoy! These beautiful dancing waves of light are best viewed an hour or so before midnight, so cozy up with your group and witness this celestial phenomenon. Lucky you—your hotel is the perfect place to view the Northern Lights!

After breakfast, you will journey out to Skaftafell National Park and in the evening, take advantage of another chance to view the northern lights.

The Lakagigar (Laki craters) is a series of craters that were formed in one of the world’s largest mixed eruptions in recorded history. The eruption of 1783 spewed lava and volcanic ash, stretching almost 16 miles across the area, creating a lava field that’s larger than New York City.

A fairly easy hike will take you to Vatnajokull glacier (the largest glacier in Europe) which covers a whopping 8% of Iceland’s landmass. As you continue, you will encounter some of the country’s most striking scenery including glacier lagoons and Reynisdrangar, basalt sea stacks at the base of Reynisfjall mountain.

Jokulsarlon, one of Iceland’s natural crown jewels, is the deepest lake in Iceland with depths of 814 feet and a surface area of 11 square miles. The striking blue color of the icebergs in Jokulsarlon are made up of ice that is 1,000+ years old and the mixture of sea and freshwater gives the lagoon its unique turquoise color.

Deildartunguhver Hot Springs is the most powerful hot spring in Europe, known for its rapid flow rate of about 57 gallons per second! But don’t worry, there are a number of walkways and observation points to safely guide you around the spring.

No journey to Iceland is complete without a soak in the geothermal baths! The hot water from the Deildartunguhver spring is mixed with icy cold water from Okjökull glacier (the smallest in Iceland) to create the perfect temperature.

Snæfellsjökull National Park, on the edge of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, is dominated by the Snæfellsjökull glacier which lies on top of a Volcano. The glacier’s peak reaches 4,744 feet and can be seen from Reykjavik on a clear day. Although the volcano is considered active, the last eruption occurred 1,900 years ago.

Visit the small fishing village of Arnarstapi for a coastal walk along jagged cliffs on the Atlantic. Then head to Djupalonssandur, an arched-shaped bay of dark cliffs and a black pebble beach with striking and strange lava-formed rock formations.
